What began as a crackdown on explicit language has evolved into a sweeping regulation of driver conduct, now threatening potential race bans for swearing or even criticizing Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA. These regulatory revisions arrive at a turbulent juncture in the relationship between drivers and the FIA, with many questioning the leadership of FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. His tenure has been defined by polarizing decisions that have further strained this already fragile dynamic.
Mercedes F1 driver and Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) director George Russell summed up the growing discontent in last November, stating, “There are a number of drivers who feel a bit fed up with the whole situation, and it only seems to be heading in the wrong direction.”
